Someone can be madly in love with you and still not be ready. They can love you in a way you have never been loved and still not join you on the bridge. And whatever their reasons you must leave. Because you never ever have to inspire anyone to meet you on the bridge. You never ever have to convince someone to do the work to be ready. There is more extraordinary love, more love that you have never seen, out here in this wide and wild universe. And there is the love that will be ready.
– Nayyirah Waheed
I first saw this quote on Jordan Bach’s Instagram page after my New Mexico / Florida / NYC spiritual field trip this past winter. I remember reading the quote on my iPhone back in Philadelphia and recounting Nayyirah Waheed’s words to a dear heart friend. We were each in different stages of letting go of romantic relationships, mine was years past and hers was just unraveling in the present.
Together in platonic friendship, we literally stood in the middle of a stone bridge over the Schuylkill River in Wissahickon Valley Park, puddles of muddy snow melting around us on the bright, warming, February day. I read the quote out loud, feeling Nayyirah’s words vibrate in truth through my body. I could re-quote every line now again, even though it’s already written in black and white at the top of this post.
I’m available to adventure on the bridge between worlds with someone who is ready to do their work in holy romantic relationship. Universe, I know you have my back, show me what you’ve got.
In the meantime, I’m finding so much appreciation in my platonic ride or die friendships, spiritual fellowship, and unconditional family relationships. I feel rich in love. I’m not in a rush. I don’t think it’s too much of a mix of metaphors to say that I know fear is the bridge between where we want to be and where we are now.
I’m standing in the middle of a beautiful bridge and I’m excited to see who shows up to join me.
I am the love that is ready.
